Boost Your Wellbeing
Part 3: Combatting the Winter Blues
Winter can sometimes dampen our mood, with shorter days and less natural light impacting our overall wellbeing. Clinical Psychologist Joyce Chong highlights some common winter wellbeing problems and offers solutions.
Problem 1: Poorer Health During Flu Season
Solution: Think of winter as an endurance race – the goal is to stay well for a three-month stretch. This means doubling down on the fundamentals: eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep. Good hygiene is also crucial to combat cold and flu germs. If you do fall ill, prioritise proper rest to avoid running your body down.
Problem 2: Being Less Active in Winter
Solution: Overcome the psychological barrier. Make movement a non-negotiable part of your day. Move your exercise indoors if needed, such as joining a gym or class, to make the weather a non-issue. There are so many indoor activities in the Macedon Ranges to get you moving. Also, explore wellbeing activities that aren't just physical. Focus on building positive emotions, engaging in an indoor hobby, or nurturing positive relationships.
Problem 3: Feeling Blah, Down, or Depressed
Solution: Winter can impact your mood, with a lack of light linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Try to get some safe sun exposure. You can try a sunrise alarm clock to help you get out of bed in the morning so that you aren’t tempted to skip your morning exercise. Increase your exercise due to its positive effects on mental health. Finally, increase pleasant activities and lean into "hygge" – the Danish concept of creating cosiness, spending time with loved ones, and focusing on connection and comfort.
By incorporating these tips into your winter routine, you can not only stay physically healthy but also boost your overall wellbeing. If you'd like to discuss a tailored plan for your winter health, don't hesitate to reach out to our team at Woodend Osteo – we're here to help you thrive!
